In the novel Going After Cacciato, a squadron in the Vietnam war go hunting after a soldier named Cacciato who has ran off with only a small trail left behind him and to where he is heading. Cacciato an AWOL soldier runs off from his squad and heads for Paris. While Paul Berlin and his men go after him. Cacciato, a dim-witted soldier, who runs away from the troop and tries to trek to Paris. The men in Cacciato's squadron all think he is slow or mentally retarded. Stink Harris another man in the squadron describes Cacciato as, "Dumb as a bullet. Dumb as a month old oyster fuck." Cacciato disappears and goes AWOL (Absent With Out Leave). He has mental redardation, but even Paul Berlin fantizises at the idea of making it away from this war. The description of him is having a round fat face, no description for height but I assume and average like five feet and ten inches. The clothes that he and all the troops wore were either army fatigues or camo.

Private First Class Paul Berlin is the sqaudron leader of Cacciato's group. He has family in Des Moines, who he writes a few times in the story. Paul Berlin seems to be in his mid to late 20's.There is no physical description given from the book, but I imagined PFC Paul Berlin as an average sized man also, with tanned skin from being outside. He would not be too tan though for they trekked through the jungle and not much light coming through the tree tops. The story does say how dirty they were from not being able to take an actual shower but only wash their hands and face in the creeks.
